Four Months

Happy 4 Months Sweet Boy!!!
Whoa...I'm 4 months!!!

Stats: Mason doesn't go to the doctor until next week but when I got on the scale with him earlier this week he was 16lbs and at least a few ounces. *(Update...at today's appointment Mason weighed 17lbs and 4oz and was 25 3/4 inches long).*

Sizes: As of late last week I noticed that some of Mason's 3-6 month outfits were getting a little snug on him. So I might have to start packing that size away. But currently he is still wearing 3-6 month and 6 month clothing, and now a few 6-9 month outfits too. Like always...just depends on the name brand. Mason is wearing size 2 diapers. Currently he is wearing Target size 2 diapers but we've had quite a few accidents (poopy and wet) so not sure if we'll be sticking with them or not. We started the Target diapers shortly before he started his second round of antibiotics so maybe just maybe we had the poopy accidents because of the loose stools. I got no excuse for the wet accidents though! Guess we just need to make sure we are changing his diapers in a timely fashion. But we're at least going to finish off the diapers that we bought (what can I say I'm dutch...not letting anything go to waste).

Food: Five days of the week (my non-working days) I breastfeed Mason every 2.5-3 hours during the day and at night he gets a 5oz bottle. The night bottle is more often than not straight formula because on my non-working days I only pump at night right before bed. On the other two days of the week (my working days) Mason gets five 5oz bottles of straight breast milk (from the freezer). As for pumping...I pump once in the morning before I head into work, twice at work, and one more time right before bed. I typically pump out about 30oz so I end up positive 5oz. I don't mix breast milk and formula anymore since he takes straight formula just fine.

Routine: We had a rough 6 week stretch but now that Mason is feeling better (for about the last 2 weeks) he has been napping during the day and sleeping at night MUCH better!!! Thank goodness. But he really doesn't have a set pattern. He takes a morning nap and an afternoon nap and sometime even an evening nap but the length and time of the naps change on a daily basis. Personally I think he naps better for daddy and his grandmas because with me he loves to fall asleep on the boob. As soon as he falls asleep I do pull him off but he'll only take a short nap since he's still hungry. He naps much better when were on the go. Then he'll nap for 2-3 hours at a time. But on average I would say he generally takes his first nap sometime between 10 and 11...his afternoon nap between 1:30 and 3...and an evening nap (we don't let him sleep longer than 30 minutes) around 6 or 6:30.

I give him a bath 3 or 4 times a week. Sometimes its a morning bath and sometime its an evening bath. When I work the weekend...he always gets a Monday morning bath!!! We kind of just started a bed time routine of bath (most nights), book, bottle (sometime boob), and bed but after the first 3 b's...he's not always ready for the last b. Generally though he falls asleep between 9 and 10pm. Since he's been feeling better he's been waking to feed only once a night (most nights anyways). (Thank-you Mase!!!) And then he's up for good anytime between 7 and 8.

Developmental Milestones: Mason will try to pull himself up into a sitting position when he's laying on mommy or daddy's lap. He can sit (against a couch) for a short amount of time (before he topples over). He is a very strong little boy. He grabs at things way more than last month and is actually starting to "play" with some of his toys (aka...suck on them). He talks, spits, and blows bubbles all the time. He can kind of roll onto his side but has not officially rolled over yet. Oh and he has AWESOME neck and head strength (see photo under Food)!!!

and because I couldn't pick just one...

Loves: Mason still loves sucking on his fingers. For a week or so he was big into his thumb(s) but since mommy and daddy kept telling him no and pulling it out he stopped sucking on it (score for mommy and daddy)!!! He loves sucking/playing with his links and his rattle oball ball. He loves hanging out on his playmat. He loves the boob and the bottle...EATING!!! He loves watching "Elmo and I Know It." He loves bathtime. He loves watching T.V. And he loves his Fisher Price Rainforest Waterfall Peek-a-boo Soother (see photo under Food).

(Watching Elmo and I Know It with daddy)

Dislikes: Getting his diaper changed in the middle of the night. My boy just wants to eat and go back to sleep. If he could talk he would say..."just forget the diap mom and give me the boob." Also not a huge fan of his paci. He likes to pull it out and play with it more than actually sucking on it. Oh and you're still not a fantastic burper...I would say we get one out of you about 65% of the time.

(Since I don't have a "dislike" picture...enjoy another of his love pictures..."playing" with his oball ball)

Other Things I Don't Want To Forget:

  • You suck on your fingers so much so that you always have "stuff" stuck between your fingers. But it doesn't help that you also have sweaty hands (and feet) by nature. You always get socks fuzzies stuck between your piggy toes.
  • You can go from a pout to a smile and back to a pout in 2.2 seconds.
  • You are a big time spitter-upper (after feeds) but you also like to spit for fun. You will do the "brrrrr" with your lips and spit goes flying everywhere. These two reason are why your shirts are always wet and smelly. Sometime we put a bib on you to catch some of your spit-up and drool.
  • You laughed at mommy for the first time on April 4 =)
  • You went to the Tanger Outlets in Howell with mommy, grandma V, Aunt Courtney, and Aunt Kristi on April 14. It was your longest car ride to date. (An hour and a half there and back).
  • You hit up your first garage sales this month. Yes sales...as in multiple!!! We love hitting up garage sales!!!
  • You always sleep with your hand(s) above your head.
(Just waking up...you're so stinkin CUTE)!!!
  • You had your second cold and your second ear infection or maybe your first ear infection just never went away. Either way you finally became YOU again two weeks ago.
  • You became a BIG cousin this month.
  • You celebrated your first MAJOR holiday. (Easter)
  • You sneeze like 50 times in a row just like your daddy (okay a bit of an exaggeration) but seriously you go to town when you sneeze!
  • You started sitting/playing in your jumperoo this month. Your legs don't quite reach the floor yet so mommy and daddy have to put a pillow underneath you!

And just because...

Liebster Blog Award

Earlier this week Mrs. Howard from The Howard Bunch gave me the Liebster Blog Award for up-and-coming bloggers (200 followers or less) that you think deserve recognition for their fabulous blogging abilities.

Here's how this award process works...
Each nominee should:
Choose five blogs to give the Liebster Award to.
Show your thanks to the blogger who gave you the award by linking back to them.
Post the award on your blog.
List the bloggers you gave the award to with links to their sites.
Leave a comment on their blogs to let them know they've received the award.
Share five random facts about yourself.

(1) I first met my husband when I was 13 years old (which would have made him 21).
(2)  After a few dates I wasn't sure if Brian was the one. My mom and sister told me I would be crazy to end things. I went on a 8 day vacation and realized that I really missed him. 3 months later we were engaged!!!
(3) I snort when I think something is really funny.
(4) I tore both my ACL's playing soccer. (I tore the left one during the first game of my Senior year and the right one in Jamaica while on a mission trip).
(5) I (along with the help of one of my older brother's friends) broke my little cousin's arm jumping on a trampoline. Talk about feeling bad. He was only 3 years old. I was 10. The friend was 16.

My Nominees:

(I couldn't tell how many followers a couple of you had so if you have more...oh well)!!!

Mason Meets His Baby Cousin

On Wednesday I headed over to my sis-in-law's so that Mason could officially meet his new baby cousin Austin. Man Mason looked crazy big compared to Austin. So big that it's hard for me to believe he's only 3.5 months older!

Can't wait to watch these two grow up together...along with their other cousin's Cole and Easton (who are not that much older). I smell trouble a-brewing already...

Jack Pot

I hit up some garage sales today and man oh miskins did I hit the jack pot!!! I have never really garage saled (excuse my bad grammar) before so it was basically a new (and very wonderful) experience for me. I mean I've been to garage sales here and there but this time was different because I was on a mission to find toys, clothes, and books for Mason  I took out $40 and here is what I got...

CLOTHES
6-12 month cream button down Old Navy shirt
9 month brown animal print Carter's romper
9 month pale blue OshKosh b'gosh romper
9 month baby blue and white Carter's zip-up sweatshirt
12 month gray OshKosh b'gosh sweat pants
12 month gray Carter's zip-up sweatshirt
12 month Carter's onesie
12-18 month brown Gap pants
12-18 month camouflage Gap pants
12-18 month denim Old Navy jeans

And the best part is that out of the 10 clothing items I bought...9 were from people I personally knew...bonus!!!

BOOKS and TOYS
3 books (Five Little Monkey's Jumping on the Bed, Amadeus Best Friends, and Curious George at the Aquarium)
Baby Einstein DVD (Baby's First Moves)
2 toy trucks
Leap Frog drum
2 play tools

The above items came to a total of $34 and my remaining $6 was spent on a frying pan and a lawn chair for my sister's new trailer. It was a good day made even better by the fact that my little man is feeling so so so much better. He is back to the baby he was 6 weeks ago (prior to his first cold and ear infection). Which means he's full of smiles and back to taking naps. (He napped from 10 to noon while mommy shopped). And last night he slept 6 STRAIGHT hours!!! Hoping soon were back to sleeping through the night...one can hope right!

Happy Easter (A Week Late)

HAPPY EASTER
from Mason!!!

Easter went a bit differently than anticipated this year but I suppose thats life with a baby!!! Late Saturday night Mason started acting fussy and suddenly he became super congested. He slept maybe an hour (two at most) that night...which means mommy and daddy slept the same amount (or less). The following morning we headed out to church (only because it was Easter). After church (since Mason was feeling okay) we headed over to my parent's house for dinner and an Easter egg hunt!!!

Our family of 3

The egg hunters...

My precious (and beautiful) nieces.

Daddy and Mason.
(Mason slept through the whole hunt).

Our family again.

Of course we had to get a picture of all the grandbabies with grandpa and grandma.

How it started...

And how it ended...

Then at night Grandpa and Grandma H came over for some appetizers and dessert. We chatted a little and played one game before I went to change a poopy diaper. While changing his diaper I thought Mason felt warm so I checked his temp and sure enough my boy had his first fever (at 101.0). I called his Pediatrician's office and they said to just continue watching him. Unfortunately mommy had to work the next two days and since I exhausted all my PTO daddy had to stay home with Mason on Monday. He seemed to be feeling a little better on Tuesday so Grandma H came over to baby-sit Mase. I was home with my boy on Wednesday and although he wasn't extremely happy he also wasn't extremely fussy. But on Thursday morning he was fussy to the EXTREME and along with the fact that he was swatting at his ear like crazy...I called his Pediatrician again. Long story short Mason either has his second ear infection or the first round of antibiotics never cleared up the first ear infection (which means he's going on a month long ear infection). So my little man is on his second round of antibiotics (omnicef this time around) and mommy is hoping for a FULL recovery for her little man!!!

And Baby Makes 3

Yes folks we welcomed another baby into the Vugteveen family this past Tuesday!!! So excited for my brother and his wife Jana on their newest (and very handsome) little edition. Meet my sweet nephew Austin Ross Vugteveen who weighed in at 8lbs 10oz and 21 inches long.

Isn't he just precious!!!

Uncle Brian and Austin

Aunt Lindsey and Austin

Unfortunately Mason is sick again (I'll get that in another post) so no pictures of the two little boys together. But once he's feeling better we'll be back to pay little Austin another visit!!!

ONE YEAR AGO

One year ago today I was excited but nervous. Hopeful yet realistic.....

One year ago today these two embryos were dethawed after being frozen for 14 months.....

And one of those little embabies turned into my real life miracle.....

Trust steadily in God, hope unswervingly, love extravagantly.

And once again my tuckered out little man!!!

Never Enough Time

It seems like there is never enough time to sit down and blog anymore. Hence my lack of postings. My only excuse...

this adorable little boy!!!

So here's my apology for not commenting on many of your blogs lately. Typically Mason is in my arms Mason is feeding when I am trying to catch up on your posts...which makes it difficult to comment. But know that I am trying my best to stay up-to-date!!!

What's Been Happening Around the Helmholdt Homestead:
  • My first day back to work was March 23. It was a success...meaning NO tears for Mason or Mommy!!! Let me remind you that I work 12 hour shifts and if you include report off time and drive time...I was away from Mason for almost 14 hours. Whoa Nellers...before this shift I had never been away from Mason for more than 3 hours at a time.
  • Have I ever said how much I dislike pumping. If I haven't I DO. I LOVE breast-feeding but really dislike the pumping aspect that goes along with it. But since I am back to work...pumping has become a more frequent thing (on my working days that is). On my first day back I tried to pump every 3-4 hours (while at work). On every other day since then...I've decided twice is enough...once between 10 and 11 and again between 4 and 5. And then I also pump before I leave for work in the morning and before bed.
  • Go figure once I go back to work they (management) start mandating us to pick up extra hours. So between March 25 and May 5 staff RN's have/had to pick up an extra 24 hours. But if we do a full night or weekend shift...it counts as double (meaning one 12 hours shift will count as the full 24 hours). Unfortunately for me...all the day weekend shifts were gone (the sign-up sheet came out days before I returned from maternity leave) so I had to sign-up for a night shift. (I wanted my shift to count as double). Obviously now that Mason is in our lives...I can't just pick up any day or time of the week that I want to. If I want to pick up a shift during the week it would have to be on a Monday, Tuesday, or a Friday and we would have to ask one of the grandma's to watch Mason but Brian and I agree that Mason is our responsibility and if I am mandated to work an extra shift then it has to be on the weekend or a night shift so that Brian is home with him. But it all worked out because I was suppose to work last night and my shift was canceled!!! Believe me I was dreading working a night shift...haven't worked one in almost 4 years...YIKES.
  • Our basement is basically finished. At some point I will get around to posting pictures. But there are a few tiny things that need to be finished yet so I'm going to wait until they're done. It took us almost a year but that was the plan.
PRAYER REQUESTS:
  • Please remember my blog friends Heather and Erin as they continue to grieve their angel babies.
  • My cousin's baby girl Serena (who is 4 weeks YOUNGER than Mason) was recently diagnosed with a form of eye cancer. She has a large tumor in one eye and a much smaller tumor in the other eye. Praise the Lord her doctors say she will not lose either of her eyes. She will however have trouble seeing with the eye that has the larger tumor in it. She will be having chemo 2 days a month (or every 2 weeks) for the next 6 months and then she will have another scan. They did an MRI yesterday to rule out any cancer in her brain. Pray that the scan is clean!!!
  • Pray for a dear coworker (Kelli) and her husband (Brandon) whose 10 month old daughter (Abby) was diagnosed last week with a brain tumor. She had the tumor removed this past Monday and they just received the pathology report back on Wednesday. Here is a brief summary of what my coworker wrote on her daughter's Carepage...The pathology came back on the tumor today it is an ependymoma. The diagnosis is not what we wanted. Dr. A said that radiation is the best treatment option for an ependymoma however the tumor can come back in 3-5 years and radiation can only be done once in the area. It is not recommended to do radiation on infants under 1 year of age because the brain is growing so much. They may wait a few weeks to begin treatment because of Abby's age (10 months). They may give chemo before and after the radiation.
  • About 6 weeks ago a guy (Andrew) that graduated a year ahead of me from high school (which makes him only 29 years old) was out on a run and dropped dead of a heart attack. He left behind a wife (Michelle) and 2 young daughters (3 years old and 4 months old). Please pray for his wife as I cannot even image what she is going through.

Silly Baby Boy

My priority...get one good (3 month) sticker shot. Mason's priority...make it hard for mommy to get one good shot by hiding/ripping off his sticker and/or sucking on his fingers. Oh silly baby boy...good thing mommy persevered!!! (If you look closely at the pictures you will see that I had to constantly move the sticker (and his position/background) just to get a good shot).

A few shots of Mason hiding/ripping off his sticker...

This was taken after I told him he was naughty = )

And then he gave me this face...
He melts his momma's heart!!!

And a few of his I just wanna suck on my finger(s) shots...

And one of the good shots...
THE END!!!
